Working out how to spend £1 million in retirement might seem a nice problem to have. However, a little more than that in your pension pot and you could see a 55% deduction from any funds over the lifetime allowance (LTA). The good news is that there’s a lot financial planners can do to help overcome this scenario, not just at the initial point of taking benefits, but later too. With a second test at age 75, it is important to be aware of the different treatment of benefits at that stage and, importantly, what can be done in the meantime to produce better client outcomes. In this session, Just will provide a reminder of the rules and some of the strategies that can be used prior to, and at the point of, the ‘second benefit crystallisation event’. They will also consider the treatment of different types of plan and their use in the retirement journey.

By attending this session, you will be able to:

  • Understand the tax treatment of pension benefits above the lifetime allowance

13:55 - 14:30 Tax planning is more important than ever – a topical, virtual case study

The Government’s approach to replenishing the fiscal hole left by the costs of the pandemic is to substantially increase stealth taxation and introduce the Health and social Care levy – with equivalent tax increases for dividends. Never has there been a more important time for advisers to discuss tax planning strategies with clients. This case study will consider topical tax planning opportunities in light of evolving tax policy and will summarise all the important tax allowances and exemptions that clients should currently be using.
