Our next speaker has a long CV, not surprising as he has been in the business for a long time, nearly 50 years. Starting out as a tied adviser in 1969, he started his own IFA firm in Bristol in 1973, building a large regional IFA in the South West and South Wales. He merged with a national firm in 2000 and the business was bought by AWD, now Chase de Vere, in 2002. Tony’s last proper job was as Chairman of AWD in the UK. He has always believed strongly “if we have grown because of others we should help others grow because of us”. He was a prolific speaker on the LIA circuit and became the LIA’s President in 1984. He represented advisers on both the boards of FIMBRA and the PIA (the forerunner to the FSA). Tony is well known in some surprising places having spoken in 55 countries and in the last month alone he has been in Hong Kong and Hungary. In 2001 Tony became the first President of MDRT from outside North America, which helped turn MDRT into the truly global organisation it is today. In 2004 Tony retired – or as he prefers to say “rewired”. He became an advocate for the fee charging model long before RDR became a glimmer in the regulator’s eye, helping other advisers grasp the opportunity of building limitlessly scalable businesses. He now spends his time mentoring other advisers, speaking, looking after his other business interests and spoiling his grandchildren.
