09:50 - 10:25 The role of alternative assets in diversifying portfolios

The last 18 months have certainly proved challenging, with the tentative pandemic recovery derailed by geopolitical events, record breaking levels of inflation and a cost of living crisis. Because of this, investor preferences are changing, with concerns such as the search for income and how investments can have a positive impact on the world. But how do clients meet their objectives in the current climate? Alternative asset classes can provide stability through diversification, helping to achieve the attractive and dependable returns investors are seeking. Throughout this session, TIME Investments will explore the benefits of investing in certain types or alternatives.

Learning objectives:

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

• Understand the important roles diversification can play in clients’ portfolios

• Identify the attractive characteristics of certain alternative asset classes

• Recognise how alternative assets can add value for different investment priorities

We will cover a brief history of why returns in the past were disappointing and why all the signs point towards the future being rewarding for the patient investor. There is only a finite time to generate wealth: EM/ Asia has a significant place within that goal and we think the near term can provide an attractive entry point.

11:20 - 11:55 ChatGPT and CGT: Two existential threats to Advisers

Recent startling developments in artificial intelligence raise profound questions about the future of humanity. Whilst technological progress opens doors to exciting new opportunities, it can also bring transformational change to well established industries. Will these advanced algorithms replace the work done by Advisers and Asset Manager, or reinforce the benefits of active human ingenuity? Meanwhile, something less ‘science fiction’ is a more clear and present danger for Advisers: the new lower allowance for Capital Gains Tax. Could this harm the decision-making processes of non-unitised MPS models and DFM portfolios, ultimately to the detriment of the long term compounding of clients' savings? In this presentation, George Fox (Investment Manager, Jupiter Merlin team) will explain why the solution is unitised, actively managed portfolios which combine the best of the human brain with algorithmic processes whilst protecting clients' assets from the impairment of long-term gains through taxation.

Learning objectives

From this presentation attendees will

  • Gain a better understanding of the use of algorithms in investment processes and the wider investment world.
  • Appreciate the advantages of Unitised portfolios versus non-unitised portfolios
  • Be able to explain why multi-manager funds will continue to play a role in client’s portfolios

Speaker: George Fox,

11:55 - 12:30 Balancing the Blend

2022 was a difficult year in the industry – bonds didn’t diversify stocks and many multi-asset funds didn’t diversify one another. If one lesson was learnt off the back of this, it was that name diversification does not equal fundamental diversification. In this presentation, we highlight the importance of true fundamental diversification against the backdrop of the value versus growth cycle, the importance of rebalancing, and how a well-diversified, regularly rebalanced portfolio can improve outcomes in the decumulation phase.

By the end of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Distinguish between name diversification and true fundamental diversification

  • Articulate the benefits of blending funds with different styles, including in decumulation

  • Explain the benefits of regular rebalancing

Speaker: James Amy, Orbis
